Bajaj Pulsar DTS-i Versions

2001

The original Pulsar came with a 150 cc or 180 cc air-cooled, single-cylinder, petrol, spark-ignited four-stroke engine. They featured a single spark plug to ignite the air-fuel mixture fed from a carburetor, simple spring shock absorbers, round headlamp dome and 1,235 mm wheelbase. Disc brakes as standard equipment was a novelty in Indian motorcycles of the early 2000s. Other standard features were parking lights and an aircraft-type fuel tank lid. The 180 cc version came with Electric Start (ES) and twin-tone horn, both of which were optional equipment on the 150 cc version.

2003

The second generation Pulsars featured Bajaj Auto's newly developed DTSi technology, which increased the power rating of both versions by 1 bhp each and also increased fuel economy. This model also sported a new headlamp assembly, 1,320 mm wheelbase, and standard twin-tone horn and trip meter.

2005

In 2005, Bajaj launched another upgrade of the Pulsar. The bike was offered with 17 inch alloy wheels as standard option, and the stance was also lowered by about 12 mm. It was the first time any bike maker in India had offered 17 inch profile wheels at the rear. The fuel tank now had a capacity of only 15 litres. The power output was now further increased to 13.5 bhp @ 8500 rpm. The rear shock absorbers were now gas-filled Nitrox absorbers.

2006

Bajaj introduced another version of Pulsar. New features included: pilot lamps separated from the main headlamp, turn indicators with clear lenses and amber bulb, self-cancelling turn indicator switch, flush LCD screen with digital read-out of key vehicle data, non-contact speed sensor, non-contact backlit switches, twin-stripe LED tail-light assembly and side panels altered for a sharp, tapering-towards-the-rear look. The engine had increased torque availability, reduced vibration and improved gear shift feel. They also introduced the 1 Down 4 Up variant of the Gear box for the first time on sub 150cc variants.

2007

In July 2007, Bajaj began selling the Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi, featuring fuel injection, a digital dash, and modern styling. This bike has some features which are totally new to the Indian market, like the fuel injection itself, rear disc brake, and clip-on handlebars.

Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi

The Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi is the latest addition to the Pulsar family of motorcycles from Bajaj Auto. Features differentiating this bike from other members of the DTS-i family include oil cooled, fuel injected engine, front and rear disc braking, tubeless tyres, a digital speedometer console (recently introduced in all other Pulsar editions) and parabolic/ellipsoidal projector headlamps.

Bajaj displayed the 220 DTS-Fi at the Delhi Auto Expo 2006. The Indian nationwide launch happened in July 2007.

Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi Features and specifications

With this introduction, Bajaj Auto would achieve a close second in the race to offer a microprocessor-based fuel injected motorcycle to Indian customers, after Hero Honda's 125 cc Glamour FI motorcycle. The new Pulsar has a longer wheelbase than its predecessor, factory-fitted front and rear disc brakes and detailed digital instrumentation. The Pulsar DTS-Fi generates a maximum power of 20 bhp and a maximum torque of 19.12 N•m (14 ft•lbf). It is also the first Indian two-wheeler with a hydraulic-actuated rear disc (230 mm) brake. It also features a stacked headlamp setup, with a projector low beam and separate high beam. The motorcycle is 2,035 mm in length, 750 mm in width and 1,140 mm in overall height. The curb weight is about 150 kg. The new Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi can achieve a top speed of 135 km/h (with a rider weighing 68 Kg.)

Engine technology

The acronym DTS-Fi stands for Digital Twin Spark Fuel Injection. Like DTS-i (which is the mother technology) the engine has two spark plugs, but, instead of conventionally positioned straight ports, the offset positioning of the ports generate high swirl and turbulence of the air fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. This results in highly efficient combustion that further results in exceptional mileage. Like the mother DTS-i technology, the DTS-Fi technology is a patented technology developed by Bajaj Auto R&D.

Bajaj Platina Bike

Bajaj Platina is a 100 CC Motorcycle built by Bajaj Auto. It debuted in 2006.

Bajaj Platina is the latest 100cc bike from Bajaj Auto to take on TVS Star City. The cheaper version will come for Rs 34,500, while the higher version of Bajaj Platina will cost Rs 36,000 ( ex-showroom prices, Delhi). Bajaj hopes to sell about 75,000-80,000 units of Platinas a month.

The Bajaj Platina is based on the CT-100, but with a revised gearbox, fresher body panels and optional alloy wheels. Bajaj also offers the Bajaj Discover 112 in the entry level segment. The entry-level segment is being strengthened by the arrival of the Bajaj Platina. The company will use it new Pantnagar plant to build the Platina.

It is very much visible that all the body panels, fairings, electronics of this bike are borrowed from the successful Bajaj Wind 125 World bike. It is debated whether it was a wise decision to cease the productions of Wind 125 & Caliber 115. Both were highly successful machines & were the top selling models in their respective segment when the production was cut. Both had exceptionally efficient & smooth Kawasaki K-Tec engines. The smooth engines were quite uncommon in India & were well received by the customers. The K-Tec engines are no longer in use & Bajaj instead uses indigenously developed power plants.

Bajaj Auto has also announced plans to launch a dual-fuel bike which will run on CNG / LPG as well as petrol. The bike is under development.

Bajaj Discover Bike

The Discover was the second Bajaj bike (After the Pulsar segment) to come with the six spoke alloys and the patented "exhaust-tec"—basically a resonator that boosts torque at lower rpms. It also employed the Bajaj trademark "dts-i" digital twin spark ignition technology used in the Bajaj Pulsar 150 and 180 dts-i. At launch, three versions were available:
  • Round headlamp, spoke wheels, drum brake
  • Fairing, spokes, drum brake
  • Fairing, disc , tacho, elecric start, alloys.

However, during mid 2005, the Discover was made a single variant model. It was revamped with new graphics, black grab-rail, sns (spring in spring) suspension, 130 mm drum brakes, six spoke alloys as standard, and some engine tweaks predominantly aimed at reducing friction and combustion roar. The Bajaj Discover has been the highest selling 125 cc bike in India since the day of its inception. Despite the fact that it has a notchy gearbox and that it is not very comfortable for tall riders (6 foot plus), it has proven to be a very popular executive commuter.

Recently, a low cost model with a 110cc engine has been launched with mixed success. This has the same body parts, SNS suspension, and other features. It comes with alloy wheels, front & rear drum brakes & no electric start. This version also does not feature the stickering which comes along with 125cc version on the mask as well as the body.

A 135cc model has also been recently released which features a front disk brake, auto-start and black alloy wheels. The silver engine has also been powder-coated black in the 135 cc variant.

Testimonial to the above facts is that it won the prestigious Overdrive "bike of the year" and "indigenous design of the year" in 2005.[citation needed] It has won critical acclaim from several other noted auto/bike magazines: Autocar India, Bike India, and Business Standard Motoring in their bike tests.

Bajaj Avenger Bike

The Bajaj Avenger is a cruiser style motorcycle conceptualized and produced by Bajaj Auto in India. It draws the styling and other design cues from the Bajaj Eliminator which had an air-cooled, single cylinder Kawasaki engine and was sold at a premium.

To gain a strategic position in the premium segment, Bajaj engineers replaced the Kawasaki single with the indigenously conceived, and more successful, 178.6 cc DTS-i engine from the Bajaj Pulsar sport bike. However, the engine had to be re-tuned to suit the torque-demanding characteristics of a cruiser. There was a massive slash in the price tag thus making it the highest value-for-money package in the market. It is also the first cruiser developed by an Indian company. The wheelbase is 1,475 mm, the longest in any motorcycle in India.

Harley Davidson Bike In India

NEW DELHI: American cult bike brand Harley Davidson can soon be seen cruising on Indian roads with the government today relaxing emission and testing norms for their import in return for allowing mango exports to the US.

The Commerce Ministry today notified that import of motorcycles up to 800 cc engine capacity or above subject to compliance to Euro III emission norms.

Individuals, firms and original equipment manufacturers with service networks would be allowed to import these bikes.

The relaxation followed an agreement reached at the India-US Trade Policy Forum meeting here.

"We have reached an agreement... now Harley Davidson motorcycles can be imported while Indian mangoes will be available in the US markets," Commerce and Industry Minister said.

"Indian mangoes are only a few days away from the shipment," US Trade Representative Susan Schwab said.

The king of fruit has not been allowed to enter the US market due to various non-trade barriers and the last hitch of radiation testing is being addressed. A radiation testing facility is being set up in Mumbai on a cost-sharing basis.

Though bikes in India have to meet strict norms, Harley Davidson and other motorcycles of higher engine capacity have been given a liberal treatment. But they would have to meet at least Euro III norms.

The government has done away with the need for conducting homologation checks for these bikes. These tests are essential to see if imported vehicles meet Indian regulations. In place of this, test certificates of accredited agency will suffice.

In the past, India had taken a tough stand on import of Harley Davidson, citing the American bike maker's inability to meet emission norms here.

The cruiser is considered a 'must-have' for the rich and the famous across the world.

Although, Harley will sell its bikes in India, it has maintained that the bikes will not be manufactured anywhere outside the US so as not to dilute its 'Made in America' exclusivity.
